Stuck in a White Room
The First Branch

The White Room

"Dear Professor Fridman,

I trust this email finds you well.

I am pleased to inform you that my trip to Poland last week Tuesday was a success in the matter of gathering data for my Master’s thesis. The remains of the Piotrkow Trybunalski Ghetto proved more fruitful than I had originally planned. The first Jewish ghetto built by the German perpetrators in order to control and exterminate the Jewish people was quite enlightening, all-be-it quite sobering and more personal than I believed it would be.

As historians, diary entries offer a window into the lives of the people who lived through these ages, while remaining untouched by history themselves. On my recent trip to the first (now in ruins) occupied ghetto from World War II, letters and personal diaries of the occupants were on display with German-Hebrew-English translations. Like a modern, morbid, Rosetta Stone.

The available dates were the dates on display at that time. The curator of the display stated that the available dates correspond with the current (or closest) dates in the present day. This turned out to be a fruitful outing. My team and I learned a lot, particularly the ingenuity of the Jewish people and how many of them (although not indefinitely) were able to fool the Nationalist Party into believing they were one of them.

It is unknown why the writer of these particular diaries started their entry in September and not January as their first entry. The curator explained that —judging by the remainder of the diary—September held a special significance to the writer based on how excited she felt about her upcoming due-date and the possible feeling of mother’s guilt settling in before the baby was born. Apparently, this is a common theme with expecting mothers. I will look into this when I return.

Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Please find my transcriptions of the diary entries below.

Aaron Zion.

P.S. My previous (German) name might pop up on the system because I am a new student and I used my German name as identification during the war. If you are unable to find Aaron Zion, please look for Aaron Brandt."

Airport Stuck

Most of us have been there: Stuck at the airport or train station because of an accidental cancelled ticket, or cancelled plane at the last minute. These events aren’t our fault: Stuff happens and we have to deal with it in the best way we can. Sometimes these events are met with humor, sometimes these events are met with frustration. Either way, it really sucks being stuck at the airport.

On the other hand, traveling can be fun and exciting even with the bumps along the runway. If you are a traveler, don’t you love getting your suitcase/s out, opening it, and reminiscing about your last trip? In a way, that could be the best part of the journey: Remembering the last one. I’ve been there: Buying a new suitcase for a long trip; looking at the optional extras of the matching carry–on, deciding between wheels or normal haul, looking at the strength of the zips and whether or not I’ll be able to lock my suitcase easily (thanks, airport criminals); and deciding on a color.

Should I be bold and pick the bright orange and purple one so I will be to spot my bag from the plane window as I wait for the 45 rows in front of me to disembark? I could focus on a sleek black and grey number (suitcase, not lingerie found inside the suitcase) for style and to spare people’s eyes, but what happens if seat number 27b has the same suitcase? Will they take my bag home because they were in a hurry and didn’t bother to check the very obvious, black and white, tag attached to the most visible part of the suitcase? Will they find my black and grey lingerie and wear it? Give it to their partner/s as a gift?

Regardless of who wears whose undergarments, getting stuck at the airport— regardless of the reason—isn’t the best way to start our holiday. If we are a lone traveler, this adds to our stress and if we can’t speak the language and are left to our own devices with a phrase book we bought on a whim which turned into the reason to travel. If we have a traveling group, the stress is exponential: For every additional person, we can add 10x the stress. What happens when we get Airport Stuck?

In the slideshow below, please find your weekly web novels for A Web of Knowledge. There are two stories for A Web of Knowledge a week: One on Tuesdays and one on Thursdays. Each Web Novel will have 15 episodes until completion, and then I will start on a new one. When each web novel is complete, I will add a few images per number of chapters. I prefer adding these at the end to give my readers a chance to form their own images in their head first!

The list of options for the following Web Novels can be found on the interactive page.

In months with five weeks, I will post in the first three weeks and post in the fourth or fifth week, depending on my timetable based on my ghostwriting schedule.

In the future, the next web novels will be available and chosen based on your inputs from the interactive [ page ].

Chapter 1: A Series of Entries

September 29, 1929

Entry 1 of year 1.

We had a normal life before all this started. Before she was born. Before we had to hide. Her father and I worked in normal jobs. We were a happy family.

My family visited often, his family not so much. They stay far away. In hindsight, maybe it’s better. Pregnancy and births are supposed to be fun and special. Well, the fun part comes before the pregnancy I guess.

There shouldn't be any complications. Your first baby should be perfect. An extension of you and your community. You deserve this! You waited too long. You are too old.

These are enough to make any new mom question herself and scream. I didn’t care. She was perfect to me. To us. Her father works so hard.

The menial labor pays enough. At least the stress is gradual and not life-threatening. At least he doesn’t have a dangerous job. I don’t know how I’d cope if I lost him. It would be the end of our world.

Airport Stuck

                             Chapter 1: The First Trip

The night before the trip of their life times brought more comfort than challenges. Isn’t that supposed to be a good thing? It was. It was a really good thing, but what the newlyweds didn’t realize was that a calm start often translates to a chaotic end–of–day.

Do we have everything? Where is that checklist? Felix didn’t understand why his new wife was being so pedantic. What happened to the carefree spirit he fell in love with?

The calls at 2 a.m. that ended with a last–round call at their local pubs? I guess it’s for the best. I wouldn’t want to get stuck and end up reinacting the movie The Terminal. I’ve got the list. Why are there marks in pencil?

Avery, the closet over–planner, could feel her face redden. Um, the pencil markings mean that we have the item but I haven’t seen it in either of our suitcases yet. When I see the whatever on the list in my or your bag, I will use a pen for the ✓. Felix’s laugh wasn’t as silent as he’d hoped it would be. Really? Don’t you think that’s a bit excessive?

Damnit, she heard me. The list wasn’t as complicated as Felix imagined. The basics were there, plus a few wedding items. Avery made a note to thank her sister when they got back: She would never have thought of matching the colors of Felix’s hair with his wedding present. The list is fine, Ray.
